Canada confirmed Thursday that one of its warships transited the Taiwan Strait last week. The strait is a sensitive waterway separating Taiwan from mainland China.
Canada’s confirmation came on the same day Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Canada. It marks the first visit by a Chinese foreign minister in a decade.
As for the Canadian warship, it transited the Taiwan Strait on its own.
It’s the first such transit since Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited China, as Canada seeks to diversify trade away from the U.S. following President Trump’s tariff hikes.
